Debussy in Dorset
-
On 14th October 2011 Andrew Moore conducted members of the music department of St Mary's School, Shaftesbury, Dorset and some friends, in a performance at the annual staff concert of Debussy's Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune in the chamber version for flute, oboe, clarinet, harmonium (organ), piano, antique cymbals and strings. This delightful arrangement is often attributed to Arnold Schoenberg; it was in fact made by under Schoenberg's auspices by Benno Sachs. The chapel at St Mary's is decorated with a beautiful mural which incorporates the image of a young deer looking out from woodland foliage - a fitting complement to Debussy's vision of Stephane Mallarme's poem.
